WHAT IS A SPROCKET?
A sprocket is a wheel with teeth that mesh with chain links to transmit motion between wheels. These components are essential in machinery for transferring heavy loads.
Sprockets come in various designs and sizes, made from materials like cast iron, mild steel, or stainless steel. They can be single, double, or triple strand, and may be constructed as a single piece or with a hub. They typically feature either flat or curved profiles.
The most prevalent type is the roller chain sprocket, commonly used in transmission systems. It operates with chains made of interconnected rollers, where each roller’s pin creates a gap for the sprocket teeth to engage.
Multi-strand sprockets, designed for higher torque applications, are found in power transmission systems, agricultural machinery, bicycles, and conveyor belts. These sprockets often come with bolted assemblies for easier installation and are known for their high tensile strength and wear resistance.
